Royal County Down Golf Course

8th Royal County Down G.C. copy.jpgThe Royal County Down course is set amid the Dundrum complex, one of the largest dune areas in Europe, which includes the beaches and dunes at Ballykinler and Murlough, Inner Dundrum Bay and Newcastle beach.

The 'modern' sand dune deposits, which form the terrain of the golf course, date back almost 5,000 years to the early Bronze Age. The sand deposits sit atop much older gravel and clay layers and the whole sequence has been used to date changes in sea levels along the north east coast of Ireland since the last Ice Age.
